Combating the Loneliness Epidemic
Many of us became more comfortable with technology to overcome feelings of isolation during the Covid 19 pandemic. “And that comfort level has made us feel more inclined to use those venues to socialize. And I think that we have noticed that that can increase isolation,” said Clinical Psychologist Jacqueline Hidalgo.
Now years later, the US Surgeon General is calling attention to the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and the lack of connection in our country. “We just want that sense of belonging, and I think when we're missing that, even if it's not in person, then that can still affect us, and yes, it can cause some negative thought processes,” said Hildago.
Poor social connection can affect your physical health. The Surgeon General found those people have a 29% increased risk of heart disease, a 32% increased risk of stroke, and a 50% increased risk of developing dementia for older adults.
Hidalgo said it’s important to reach out and check in on friends and loved ones. “Whether it is by phone or by internet, it's okay. You know, we do encourage some in-person contact with other people because we do feel like it's important.”
Talking with a behavioral health expert can help support those dealing with feelings of isolation. “We can talk about social skills. We can talk about how to approach communication if we haven't had it in a while. We can talk about what are the barriers to socializing and what is important to the person as it relates to their social support circle,” said Hildago. You can learn more by searching for behavioral health on leehealth.org.

Treating Rheumatoid Arthritis
Переглядів 514 години тому
Rheumatoid arthritis causes painful swelling in the body. “It’s more common as we get older, but it’s an auto immune disease,” said Independent Musculoskeletal Radiologist Dr. Jamel Ksar. Inflammatory arthritis is 2-3 times more prevalent in women than men. It mainly attacks a person’s joints, but it can also cause problems in the lungs, heart, and eyes. “If you don’t get treated early for infl...

Every second counts during a trauma alert. “Having a trauma center is huge. It means that if you or I or one of our loved ones gets injured, you have a place locally where they will have their injuries addressed and potentially their life saved,” said Trauma Medical Director Dr. Maria Alfaro. The trauma center serves the most complex and life-threatening cases. They most commonly see blunt trau...
Appendicitis in Children
Переглядів 7521 годину тому
Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Andre Hebra often treats patients with appendicitis. It’s caused by some sort of blockage. “Once that is obstructed, it becomes infected and creates a lot of pain and fever and discomfort. And usually very quickly like within 24 hours if the appendix is not removed, it will progress to what’s called a ruptured appendicitis.” The number one symptom is severe pain in the low...
Using AI to Help Detect Colon Cancer
Переглядів 214День тому
Colorectal is the 3rd most common form of cancer in the US. Although the colonoscopy is the gold standard for a colon cancer screening, the human eye can only do so much. “It can be hard to find, it can be flat, it can be small, it can be hidden behind folds,” said Dr. Ashwani Sethi. “In colonoscopies, we miss 20% of adenomas of polyps. And if we can detect more polyps, then we can decrease the...
Robotics in Neurosurgery

While robotics have been used in specialties like general surgery, cardiology, and orthopedics for years, it’s still newer for brain and spine surgeries. “The challenges with minimally invasive surgery in a nervous system, like the brain or the spine, is different from the abdomen or other locations in the body. And so the medium that we have to work through is different. We have to have a very...

Treating Hand Arthritis with the BTE Machine

Occupational Therapist Valarie Haag often sees patients who are dealing with thumb arthritis. “That’s the joint starts to wear away with arthritis. They’re not as strong with their pinching and not able to hold things as well as they did before.” That pain and lack of grip strength can make normal daily tasks difficult. “When you have pain, you stop using your hand and stop doing things with it...
Obesity is on the Rise Worldwide

Obesity is an epidemic in the United States. “Approximately 40% of the US adult population is obese and then severely obese is 9%,” said Dr. Maja Delibasic. The World Health Organization said 1 in 8 people worldwide are living with obesity. Worldwide adult obesity has doubled since 1990, and adolescent obesity has quadrupled. Obesity can lead to an increased risk for health problems. “We know t...
Treating Fevers in Kids

Dr. Alfredo Vargas often sees kids dealing with fevers. “It’s probably the most common complaint we see in a pediatric emergency department.” A fever is a symptom of some kind of foreign germ in your system. “When something is basically invading the body, the bodies defense is to increase the temperature. By increasing the temperature, you’re going to speed up your heart rate, speed up the meta...

Preventing Common Injuries in Kids
Переглядів 10821 день тому
Pediatrician Dr. Nesibe Ozfidan said unintentional injuries vary by age. Young kids tend to put things in their mouth or nose “All the time, because they don't know what's dangerous or not. So, they also try to explore things through their mouths.” Small toys, magnets, and pills can be especially dangerous because families often aren’t sure exactly what the child swallowed. “There is a saying i...

While calling 911 or going to the emergency department is critical in a life-threatening situation, “If you seek care at the emergency department for non-emergent or non-critical immediate needs, it's likely that you are going to be prioritized behind somebody who needs immediate intervention,” said Dr. Iahn Gonsenhauser, Lee Health’s Chief Medical Officer. I am 19 years old. 3 months ago I got a bad flu which left me feeling tired and brain foggy today. The temperature may rise to 37.4. I was told that maybe my body is fighting the herpes virus. Then I took tests, everything was normal except for lymphocytes of 63% and low granulocytes. Now I had an MRI of the brain (they found cysts on both sides), a test for thyroid hormones, and fluorography for diabetes mellitus. Everything was clean, I re-tested the usual blood test and everything is also normal except for lymphocytes 47%, the symptoms persist. Today my throat started to hurt and my voice was changing. The day before yesterday I sang a lot and smoked electronic cigarettes, I smoked and before that I drank very hot teas, and yesterday I also smoked an electronic cigarette. Today these throat symptoms started without smoking. What happened with me. Can I have throat cancer at 19? And what's wrong with me anyway?

I had a surgery to repair this. They found so many ulcers my stomach adhered to my liver. They gave me kinda like a gastric bypass and I was underweight. I'm tall (5"8). It's been a full year now and I still cannot stomach anything but 2 foods. I'm either now totally grossed out from previous unfortunate vomiting or fearful of what might happen. I don't know if I have gastroperese anymore but I cannot find anyone that can help. My stomach specialist didn't teach me how to eat again after showing Starvation in my lab work. I don't know who else to ask for resources. I'd appreciate any help I can get. The thought of eating upwards of 7x a day sounds like my personal hell. I don't care about my weight. This isn't vanity it's pain and fear of pain
